Comics and Cocktails: Transgender Celebration

Welcome to a new column, “Comics and Cocktails,” inspired by many nights sitting with a pile of comics paired with a whole range of tasty beverages.

Let’s start with a wedding celebration.

"Batgirl" #45, Alysia Yeoh and Barbara Gordon

In October 2015, “Batgirl” hosted a wedding between Alysia Yeoh and her girlfriend, Jo. More than a wedding between two women, Yeoh is transgender making the wedding the first of it’s kind in mainstream comics.

I love comic stories that not only entertain us, but have the chance to open our eyes.

Yeoh’s wedding comes at a time when the transgender population has been gaining visibility with notable public figures like Laverne Cox and Caitlyn Jenner as well as TV shows "Orange is the New Black," and "Transparent." And just last week, the second Wachowski sibling came out as transgender, making the Wachowski brothers – creators of “The Matrix,” “Bound” and “Sense8” – the Wachowski sisters.

Unfortunately, with public exposure there is inevitable public pushback. Recently state legislatures have begun debating the rights of those who are transgender, going as far as ruling who can and cannot use public facilities.

To those arguing against these basic rights, may I suggest they pick up a few issues of “Batgirl.” Read the journey of Yeoh from her coming out transgender to celebrating her wedding. Realize that she is, in fact, a she, no matter what body she was born in.

And hopefully, the kids reading “Batgirl” today, will understand more about those who are transgender, and help make restricting laws a thing of the past.
